Why learn spanish in Sevilla ?
Seville, capital of Andalusia, is a very lively and warm city. Thanks to its monumental heritage and its historic and cultural tradition, it is one of the most appreciated Spanish resorts by tourists from all over the world.
It is located near the river Guadalquivir and first settlements in this area date back to the 7th century BC, even if it is understood that Scipione founded this city in 206 BC and called it Italica.
After the Roman Empire fall, the town was invaded by vandals and Visigoths. In 712, it was conquered by the Arabs, who called the town Ishbiliya, from which originated the current name. When in 1248 King Ferdinando III of Castile conquered the town, most of its mosques were transformed into Christian churches and new churches were built. The town reached its glory after the Discovery of America because the “Casa de Contratación”, the institution which regulated trade exchanges with the New World, was established here.
Nowadays Seville is a modern and welcoming town, which managed to preserve its culture and its traditions, among which Flamenco, Easter celebrations and the Feria de Abril (April Fair) are the most important.
Visiting Seville means venturing oneself in its districts and discovering the traces of its rich Arabian and Roman pasts. The long Arabian presence, for instance, has left permanent traces in the monuments that nowadays are considered symbols of this town.
Among the most emblematic places from an historical and artistic point of view, there are the majestic Cathderal with the Giralda, the belfry which originally constituted the minaret of the mosque. Of special arquitectonic interest are also the Real Alcazares, the King fortresses where you can admire sumptuous rooms, courtyards and nice gardens.
The cathedral (La Giralda), The Alcazares, and the Archive of Indias, the magnificent palace overlooking Plaza del Triunfo, have been declared UNESCO heritage in 1987.
After the sightseeing tour, what about enjoying the city and its gastronomy in one of the restaurants, bars or terrazas in town? There are plenty of them especially in the city centre and you will have the chance to taste the delicious typical cuisine of Seville. For instance try the gazpacho, a cold soup made of tomatoes, cucumbers, paprika, garlic, olive oil, vinegar and bread. And for nightlife lovers, we advise you to pop in one of the bars in Santa Cruz district and then in one of the discos of Alfalfa.
Sun, warmth, joy, colours, folklore and parties, this is what Seville offers to its visitors. So, if you want to immerge yourself in the study of Spanish, nothing better than doing it in the town which embodies the soul of Spain, where tapas, parties and happiness are not stereotypes but realities. All this together with its extraordinary culture and unique artistic heritage will make Seville unforgettable.
